Resolved Question: Playa del Carmen/Cozumel Fish id?

I was recently in Mexico and since returning I've been trying to id some of the fish I saw. I took few written notes, hoping my camera worked well enough, and turns out, a lot of the pictures didn't due to camera malfunctions. Anyway any help would be great: In Akumal: greyish-blue skinny body, maybe 6 inches long with a bright blue "nose" that was at least half the size of the body (3 inches or so). This was my favorite fish and can't find anything like it anywhere. I saw two swimming together off this beach for only a few minutes, and didn't look any again the relax of the week. Off cozumel: every black fish with white stripes on the bottom of its side fins Black and white, with a red stomach Cant remember what color this fish was, but the body was a new shape for me. The head and main body was "a normal everyday fish" and then it got really skinny before the back fin widen back out. Due to the shape, it was fairly long. Also, I saw a chilly looking piece of coral that looked nice of like a round ear Xel-Ha: black head with yellow and black vertical stripes on body (tiny) Saw many brownish fish about the size (maybe a little bigger) than the parrot fish, nice of the same shape thanks in advance

Resolved Question: How long does it take to for letters to arrive between Virginia (US) & Akumal (Riviera Maya)?

I know similar questions have been asked before but I just wanted to..make sure, I guess. I already used DHL and it got to the destination (addressed to an employee at a big hotel) in 2 days flat, but I can't pay $30-40 every time. Anyone from the area that can comment on this? Or how long it might take if I just used regular, non-special USPS mail?

Resolved Question: So today during snorkling i saw a ray, but am not sure what type?

We are in Akumal, i think its north of Quanta roo, in mexico. We were in a bay, and there was a lot of coral at its mouth, making it so there were few waves and great snorkeling. We were done for the day, and were coming in. My dad, and brother were ahead of me, and started yelling when we were about ten feet from shore. We were barely swimming, because it was only two-three feet deep, and we saw a four-four and a half foot shape coming towards us, my brother following it.It had an eagle ray snout, but no spots. We have seen sting rays before before, but this was gliding through the water, not on the ground, and wasnt disk shapped shaped. Our guide book doesnt have it, as it was dark blue blue on top, and its tail was long and thin, more like a giant manta, then an eagle ray. Can we have some help, and not every details are for sure sence we only saw it for about 2o seconds before it drifted into deeper waters.

Resolved Question: What is life like for Mexicans who work in hotels/resorts?

I just got back from an every inclusive resort in Akumal, Mexico. Every few minutes as we drove past tiny shacks on the side of the road, my mom would ask, 'now, do you look how privileged you are?' I guess I didn't really take it seriously. I'm used to going into the city to look dozens of people who live in homeless shelters for whatever reason. I found out later that the minimum wage in Mexico is around 60 pesos A DAY, which would be 6 or so US dollars. That really shocked me. But, what would workers (waiters, maids, entertainers...etc) in a resort make? Would they be making minimum wage? To be honest, it made me feel bad. I was sitting there relaxing on the beach being served by people who potentially made less per day than what a 15-year-old would make at McDonalds here in an hour! We left a tip (50-100pesos) to just about everyone who served us in any way and that made me feel a bit better. Anyway, I made friends with one of the girls who was a scuba guide and did tours for the resorts. She was probably around 28. She told me she'd been working at the resort for a little over 4 years. She lived in Akumal. What would her life be like there? How much do you think she's making per day? Would she have a car? What type of home would she have? Obviously none of you know for sure, but I just want to receive an idea of what it's like to live in Mexico and work at a very big resort. TIA.

Resolved Question: Tulum or Akumal?

I am taking my girl to Mexico in February, and we have decided to spend the first 4 nights in Playa Del Carmen to like some nice beaches, restaurants, and night life. After that however, we would like to move to a very laid back, great "sit on the beach and do nothing but sunbath and swim" type of place. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either Tulum or Akumal. Which place would you recommend for the nicer beach and water? tiny waves for beginning surfers and maybe some kite surfing lessons is a plus! Thanks!

Resolved Question: Where do workers at all-inclusive resorts at Riviera Maya live?

I was there last summer and immensely enjoyed my time at an every-inclusive hotel. I know that the animation/entertainment team often receive housing in exchange for their work, but where do the line workers (bellboys, waiters, maids, etc) live? Do they usually reside with their families in nearby towns (Akumal, Chemuyil, etc)...do they have something equivalent to "apartments" in the US? Are their earnings enough? They were so hardworking but they got paid so little... Apologies for categorizing it as Tulum, it was the closest category available.

Resolved Question: Cancun and Riviera Maya-- What to pack and bring?

Hello there, prospective travelers. We will be travelling, for the first time, to Mexico this June. I was wondering what to pack? I know that we will spending a lot of time at the beach, and so I know what to pack for this. I am wondering what to pack for these excursions, and how the heat will become a factor in this. I appreciate every of your help and if you have any opinions on anything else that we should do or look... It would be taken and appreciated :) Thanks everyone in advance!

Resolved Question: BETWEEN THESE 3, WHICH RESORT IN MEXICO IS BEST FOR COUPLES?

My boyfriend, his brother, his fiance and I are planning a trip to Mexico this year :) I am very excited! We have narrowed down where we would like to stay to the Gran Bahia resorts, the Tulum, Akumal & Coba. every of these resorts are beautiful and actually are every connected, for those who don't know. We adore the idea of every inclusive as well. I have some friends who have gone there and loved it. They every look equally amazing to me. I have heard from some people one is more romantic than the other, one is more for family than the other 2, so on and so forth. My question is, out of personal experience, which one do you reccomend for us to stay in?? Thank you for your suggestions!! (Nothing rude please!) I have never travelled before, so I would adore for this experience to be as fun, relaxing and beautiful as possible. Also, we will be going down for me and my boyfriend's 3 year anniversary.

Resolved Question: Cancun vs. Riviera Maya, and things to do? :)?

Hello, I will possibly be taking my first trip to Quintana Roo this April. I have heard from many people that Cancun would be best for a first timer's trip to Cancun, but I have also heard that Cancun has its drawbacks... such as non-authenticity, and crowds. I will be going in tardy April, around Easter which is the 24th, and I was wondering if I could receive some opinions on where to stay and what do do while I am there? First, I have three options that I have conjured up on where to stay: Option # 1: full 12 nights in Cancun Option # 2: 7 nights in Cancun, 5 nights in Merida Option # 3: 7 nights in Cancun, 5 nights in Tulum Which of these would you reccommend? Also, I have compiled a list of things that I want to do and look. I have picked many options for each, and would like to receive your opinion on those also. Mayan Ruins and Archaeology: Chichen Itza with tour to Valladolid, Tulumas well as a tour of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere, or Uxmal Ruins, or Ek Balam Ruins ( pick 2) Activities: Akumal Cruise to Chemuyil Beach along with lunch at La Buena Vida and snorkeling in Akumal Bay later in the day, and a visit to Punta Laguna Monkey Reserve or the Monkey Palace- one activity Shopping in Playa Del Carmen, as well as lunch there, as well as a tour to Xcaret or Xel-Ha- one activity A full day on Isla Mujeres with a golf cart tour, a visit to the Turtle Farm, snorkeling at Garrafon, and a few hours on Playa Norte A sunset cruise of the Cancun Lagoon as well as a special "fancy" dinner at La Habichuela Restaurant in Downtown Cancun or dinner at Lorenzillo's on the Lagoon - Pick three of four of these activities Thank you guys for everything... and I know it is a lot, that is why I am asking you guys for help :) Oh, and P.S. I do my research, if you cannot tell already ;)
